Warehouse 11 is bonkers
Sep. 14th, 2020 08:47 pmI'm about to go watch episode 33 of TLTR. I'm not entirely happy that it dropped so soon after we free-account people got the end of the first season, because I could really use some boredom for productivity reasons. But will that stop me from watching right away? No. No it will not.
Anyway, before I go further, I did want to post my personal thoughts on the last ten or so episodes of the first season. Not exactly glowing praise here, but, honestly, more positive than I expected!
Warehouse 11 ended up feeling like one of my plottier morning dreams. You have to get a box...out of a hole lined with KNIVES. You check the star chart on the ceiling to figure out where to place your box. You have to walk across a chain over a bottomless chasm with a crate strapped to your back! There's a cute girl hanging around to tell you what to do. Bag of fireflies tied to a baby doll ??? yes this is a brilliant plan. Uh-oh you coughed up a pearl! (Never mind, that one's censored.) Oh now we're free-diving through a sea of dangling corpses. There is a giant cave full of mysterious crates inside the warehouse and there used to be two dudes living inside it. But now it is the time to put itching powder in everyone's clothing. Why? Stop asking questions! You have to do it!
It is not what I really want from this show, but it wasn't bad, exactly? I mean, it was bad, I guess, in the sense that it neither had a discernible plot nor compelling emotional content, but it was weird and fun. I came around to liking it pretty quickly after my last post. I am fond.
The Piaopiao storyline, however, did not circle back around to enjoyable for me. I hated it, which was much more disappointing than hating Sunglasses/Mute Girl in the earlier episodes because Pangzi is probably my favorite character. I felt like Piaopiao was set up to have some personality early on, but by episode 24 her only emotion was crying in womanly helplessness which ugh. Xiao Bai isn't perfect, but she's so dramatically better-written than any other female character in the show that it's always a relief when she's onscreen.
Kanjian's slingshot lessons are fantastic. He is adorable and I love him. I might ship him with Wu Xie a bit.
Director Ding is a TERRIBLE villain. In every way. Makes me feel bad for making fun of Zhu Jiu.
Wu Xie sticking his tongue out is going to be one of those moments that lives in my head forever, making me laugh at inappropriate moments during unrelated conversations.
Okay, well. Time to find out how this warehouse nonsense ends, I guess!

Date: 2020-09-15 05:15 am (UTC)Warehouse 11 ended up feeling like one of my plottier morning dreams.
It's just like one of those dreams where you know you have to do A, but in order to do A you have to do B first, and then somebody distracts you into doing C, and then...and by the time you wake up you're down around K or Q and you still haven't gotten A done, and...
One way and another, the warehouse arc just contained so much Wu Xie, being competent (for certain Warehouse 11-specific values of competent) and hurting a lot and just generally being beautiful, that I had a good time with it. Let's see what season 2 has to offer...

The "reveal" that he was the villain was so completely baffling to me, like...of course he is? The only reason why we ever suspected it was someone else was because it was too obvious??
Bu Wu Xie was gorgeous and I love his arrogant attitude in W11, and how does he look so good in a baseball cap anyways? Really W11 was what I expected the whole show to be (ZYL looking amazing while running around doing nonsense) so everything I genuinely love is an unexpected bonus! (however I was not sad to say goodbye to the warehouse and get back to those loved things!)

Date: 2020-09-15 04:52 pm (UTC)+1. I mean, I had vip and finished s1 in mid-August but now there are gonna be 3 dramas that I want to watch all airing at the same time. (To Dear Myself, which I'm mostly enjoying so far, TLTR s2, and Bai Yu's The Long Night is airing tomorrow apparently.) I'd have liked to space this stuff out a bit more.
...I'm just gonna wait a bit to start watching s2, I guess.
Hee, yes! That's a good description.
I agree with your character notes. Honestly, Piaopiao ruined my enjoyment of the show and Xiao Bai is the only woman written like a human. Overall, ugh. ://
Kanjian is a cutie and I like him very much. I hope we see more of him in s2.

Date: 2020-09-16 01:55 am (UTC)Yeah, that's exactly the kind of dream I'm talking about! You wake up going "what was that even originally about? What was I trying to do?" Warehouse 11. I do enjoy some surreal wackiness, as well as all the Wu Xie content you mentioned, so I'm glad I watched the whole thing. Hoping for less censorship butchery, at least, in s2, but I think this proves I'll stick it out no matter what. ^^

Date: 2020-09-16 02:10 am (UTC)This. What? "It is I, Director Ding, who has been ineptly attempting to thwart your plans all along!" We...we know, dude. Everyone knew. You told Wu Xie you were going to stop him at least five times. Did you think you were being subtle??
Wu Xie does look improbably good in the bad cap and bad attitude! And it's true that the show was just exceeding expectations up to W11, so it's all fair, really. I'm mostly just eager to get back to the characters who've been absent for the whole W11 arc; I don't mind if the plot keeps being meandering nonsense at that point. :D

Date: 2020-09-16 02:13 am (UTC)Xiao Bai proves that the people in charge are capable of writing actual human Earth women, which kind of makes it worse that Piaopiao and the others are so egregiously bad. :// indeed.
Kanjian is just a Good Boy, and that's all he needs to be for me to enjoy his presence. <3
